Paul
commands both testing and holding fast in 1 Thessalonians 5:21
because both are essential for discernment and spiritual maturity. "But examine everything; hold
firmly to that which is good." Testing without holding fast can lead
to skepticism or endless doubt with no foundation. Holding fast without testing can lead
to blindly accepting false doctrine or tradition. You can't truly do one without the
other. If you don't test, how will you know what is good? If you test
but don't hold fast to what is good, you've missed the point. Paul's command strikes a balance: Discern truth carefully, Reject error boldly, Cling tightly to what aligns with God's
Word. This was especially important in the
first-century church, where false teachings and prophecies were
spreading rapidly. It's just as vital today.
