Matthew
24:34
"Truly I say to you, this generation
will not pass away until all these things take place."
Introduction: Today we look at a single verse.
Just one. Matthew 24:34. A statement from
Jesus Himself. A verse so clear that you have to be taught to
misunderstand it.
What Did Jesus Say? "Truly I say to you" –
When Jesus says "truly," He is emphasizing truth,
certainty, and authority. "This generation will not
pass away" – Jesus is speaking to His
generation, the people standing right there. "Until all these things take place" – Not some
things. Not most things. All
these things.
What Are "These Things"? The context is key. Go back to
Matthew 24:1-3: Jesus told the disciples the
temple would be destroyed. They asked Him when it
would happen and what signs to look for. Jesus proceeds to describe: Wars and rumors of wars (v6) Nation rising against nation
(v7) Persecution (v9) Gospel preached to the whole
world (v14 – compare with Colossians 1:6, 23) Abomination of desolation (v15) Great tribulation (v21) Signs in the heavens (v29) Coming on the clouds (v30) Gathering of the elect (v31)
What Did Jesus Mean by "This Generation"? The Greek word is genea,
meaning the people alive at that time. In every other place in the
Gospels where Jesus says "this generation," it always
refers to the one He is speaking to. (See Matthew 11:16, 12:41-42,
23:36) Matthew 23:36 says: "Truly I
say to you, all these things will come upon this generation." So in two back-to-back chapters, Jesus says it clearly and
consistently.
Why Is This Important? If we ignore Jesus' timeframe, we
make Him out to be wrong or misleading. But He was not wrong. Everything
He said did take place by 70 AD. Jerusalem was destroyed, the temple was torn down, and not
one stone was left upon another, just as He said (Matthew 24:2).
What About the "Coming on the Clouds"? This is judgment language from
the Old Testament. Isaiah 19:1 – "The Lord is
riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt…" It is not about a physical
appearance, but divine judgment. Jesus came in judgment upon Jerusalem, just as He said.
Conclusion: Matthew 24:34 stands as a witness
to Jesus' truthfulness. It was fulfilled just as He said
it would be. You do not have to stretch the
text, change the meaning of "generation," or postpone
fulfillment for 2,000 years. Instead, you can stand firm in
the knowledge that Christ's words did not fail. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will
not pass away." (Matthew 24:35)
Call to Action: Let us not be ashamed of the
words of Christ. Let us boldly proclaim fulfilled
prophecy, so that others may see the reliability of Jesus' words. Truth was not delayed. It was
delivered. And the kingdom is here.
