The New Creation Is Covenant Restoration in Christ
Part
10 of 10, all posted same day, links at bottom
When the Bible speaks of the
new creation, most people assume it refers to a remodeled universe or
a physical transformation of the material world. But scripture
interprets scripture. The new creation is the New Covenant world in
Christ, the restored relationship between God and His people, and the
fulfillment of everything the prophets longed for. The Old Covenant
creation passed away, and in Christ the new creation came into being.
This is covenant renewal, not cosmic reconstruction.
For behold, I create new
heavens and a new earth, and the former things will not be remembered
or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create,
for behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing and her people for
gladness. I will also rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people,
and there will no longer be heard in her the voice of weeping and the
sound of crying. No longer will there be in it an infant who lives
but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his days, for the
youth will die at the age of one hundred and the one who does not
reach the age of one hundred will be thought accursed. They will
build houses and inhabit them, they will also plant vineyards and eat
their fruit. They will not build and another inhabit, they will not
plant and another eat, for as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the
days of My people, and My chosen ones will wear out the work of their
hands. They will not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for
they are the offspring of those blessed by the Lord, and their
descendants with them. It will also come to pass that before they
call, I will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear.
The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat
straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent's food. They will do
no evil or harm in all My holy mountain, says the Lord.
†
Isaiah's new heavens and new earth are inseparably tied to renewed
Jerusalem, which identifies this as a covenant reality, not a
physical one.
† The wolf and lamb imagery
reflects covenantal reconciliation, the removal of hostility, and
restored fellowship under the Messiah.
† This
passage contrasts life under the curse of the Old Covenant with life
under the blessing of the New Covenant, showing the transformation of
covenant relationship rather than physical ecosystems.
†
Everything Isaiah lists is relational, communal, and covenantal.
Nothing in this passage refers to planets, stars, or universe-wide
destruction, proving this is about Israel's covenant transformation.
For just as the new heavens and
the new earth which I make will endure before Me, declares the Lord,
so your offspring and your name will endure.
† The new
creation's permanence comes from the permanence of the New Covenant,
not from physical durability, proving this is covenantal identity.
†
Isaiah ties the new creation directly to the restored name and
lineage of God's people, making it clear that this is a covenant
reality anchored in redemption, not astronomy.
Therefore if anyone is in
Christ, he is a new creature, the old things passed away, behold, new
things have come.
† This is personal
covenant transformation.
† Paul says new
things have come, not will come thousands of years later.
†
The old things that passed away are the old covenantal distinctions
and identities, proving the transformation was spiritual and
covenantal, not geological.
For neither is
circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And
those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and
upon the Israel of God.
† The new
creation is tied to the Israel of God, the covenant people in
Christ.
† This is the true biblical meaning
of new creation.
† The rule Paul speaks of is
the standard of the New Covenant, showing that new creation is the
identity and life of redeemed people, not a future physical event.
Then I saw a new heaven
and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth passed
away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new
Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride
adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne,
saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell
among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be
among them. And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and
there will no longer be any death, there will no longer be any
mourning, or crying, or pain, the first things have passed away. And
He who sits on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new.
And He said, Write, for these words are faithful and true.
†
This is fulfilled covenant life, not a new solar system.
†
The first things, the Old Covenant world, passed away, and God made
all things new in Christ.
† The removal of
the sea, which symbolized separation and chaos, shows the end of the
covenant barrier that once stood between God and His people.
†
God dwelling with His people fulfills the entire story of redemption,
showing that the new creation is God's restored relationship with His
covenant community.
† The wiping away of
tears is covenantal as well, referring to the removal of the curses
and judgments of the Old Covenant, not the end of biological death on
planet earth.
† John's vision is the
completion of the covenant story, the full arrival of what Isaiah
foresaw, and the visible reality of the kingdom Christ established.
†
The new creation is our present covenant reality in Christ, not a
future transformation of the planet.
† We are
the new Jerusalem, the restored people of God, living in the promises
Isaiah and John foresaw.
† The Old Covenant
world passed away and God now dwells with His people in the New
Covenant creation, where relationship, identity, and purpose are
fully renewed in Christ.
