Jesus Is My God

(The scriptures in this sermon are grouped by topic to clearly show the fullness of Christ's divinity.)

Matthew 28:18
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

I'm one who believes Jesus is God. My relationship with Christ has never been better. I'm in prayer with Him 24/7. The following is why I believe Jesus is my God.

First, how is your relationship with Jesus? Why do you have a relationship with Him if He is not God? And if you don't have a relationship with Him, does He know you?

Jesus declares His own deity

John 8:58
Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.

Jesus declared Himself as the "I Am" from Exodus 3:14. The Jews understood this and tried to stone Him because He was claiming to be God.
His existence did not begin with Abraham, it is eternal, showing His divine self-existence.

John 10:30
I and the Father are one.

The word "one" in Greek means one in nature and essence, not merely one in purpose.
The Jews understood His claim perfectly, they accused Him of blasphemy because He made Himself equal with God.

John 5:18
For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

Even His enemies understood His claim of equality with God.
He called God His Father in a way that no man could, revealing His divine identity.

Jesus forgives sins and gives life

Mark 2:7
Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming, who can forgive sins but God alone?

Even Jesus' critics unknowingly testified to His divinity. They admitted that only God can forgive sins.
By forgiving sin, Jesus revealed His divine authority and identity as God in human form.

Luke 5:21
The scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?

Luke's account agrees with Mark's, showing that forgiveness of sin was known to be God's power alone.
Jesus demonstrated that same power, proving that He is God in the flesh.

Matthew 9:2-6
And they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, Take courage, son, your sins are forgiven. But some of the scribes said to themselves, This man blasphemes. And Jesus said, Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Get up, and walk? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, then He said to the paralytic, Get up, pick up your bed and go home.

Jesus linked His power to heal with His power to forgive, showing divine authority over both body and soul.
He didn't appeal to God for permission, He exercised God's power as His own.

John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.

Only God can give life and raise the dead, yet Jesus claimed to be life itself.
This verse leaves no doubt that He possesses divine power over death and eternity.

Jesus is the Creator and sustainer of all things

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.

The use of "Us" and "Our" reveals divine plurality in unity, showing the Word was active in creation.
Jesus, the eternal Word, was present and involved in forming mankind from the beginning.

Colossians 1:15-17
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Jesus is not part of creation, He is the Creator of all things.
The entire universe continues to exist because of His sustaining power.

Colossians 2:9
For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.

This declares the fullness of God's nature is in Christ.
He is not partially divine, He is the complete embodiment of God in human form.

Philippians 2:5-7
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Jesus existed eternally in the form of God, proving His divine preexistence.
His humility in becoming man does not remove His deity but reveals His love.

Micah 5:2
But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.

The Messiah's origin is eternal, confirming His divine existence before His birth.
Only God can be described as existing from the days of eternity.

Jesus is the eternal God revealed in the flesh

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign, Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

The prophecy clearly identifies the coming Son as "God with us."
Jesus fulfilled this when He was born of the virgin Mary, proving His divine nature from birth.

Matthew 1:23
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which translated means, God with us.

Matthew confirms Isaiah's prophecy directly applies to Jesus.
Immanuel means the literal presence of God dwelling among His people.

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word is eternal, existing with God and being God Himself.
Jesus is that Word, preexistent and divine from eternity.

John 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The eternal Word took on flesh without ceasing to be God.
Jesus revealed the invisible God in a visible, tangible form.

Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

This prophecy directly names the Messiah "The mighty God."
The child born is not a man becoming divine, but God Himself taking on humanity.

Hebrews 7:25
Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Only an eternal God can offer eternal salvation.
Jesus' everlasting life ensures the continual intercession of God on behalf of His people.

Titus 2:13
Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Paul identifies Jesus as both God and Savior.
His glorious appearing is the return of God Himself, not a lesser being.

Revelation 19:13
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

The same Word from John 1 is revealed again as the divine, conquering King.
The robe dipped in blood reminds us that God Himself shed His own blood for our redemption.

Jesus is one with the Father

John 14:7
If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also, from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.

To know Jesus is to know the Father because they share the same divine nature.
Jesus revealed the Father perfectly, showing that they are inseparable in essence.

John 14:9
Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father, how can you say, Show us the Father?

Jesus declared that seeing Him is seeing the Father, because He is the visible image of the invisible God.
He makes it clear that the Father and the Son are not two gods but one divine being revealed through Him.

Isaiah 44:6
Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts, I am the First and I am the Last, besides Me there is no God.

This Old Testament declaration belongs to Yahweh, yet Jesus uses the same title in Revelation, proving His equality with the Father.
There can be no other God beside Him, showing the unity of Father and Son as one Lord.

Philippians 2:6
Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped.

Jesus did not need to reach for equality with God because He already possessed it.
His humility in becoming human did not deny His divinity, it revealed it through love.

Revelation 22:13
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

These are titles reserved only for God, yet Jesus claims them for Himself.
He identifies Himself as the eternal Lord, the same God who spoke through Isaiah.

Apostolic declarations of His deity

Acts 20:28
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Paul directly states that God purchased the church with His own blood.
This proves that Jesus, whose blood was shed, is God Himself.

Romans 9:5
Whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Paul identifies Jesus Christ as "God over all."
The phrase "blessed forever" affirms His eternal divine nature.

2 Peter 1:1
To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Peter declares Jesus to be both God and Savior in one statement.
This matches Paul's words in Titus 2:13, uniting apostolic testimony that Jesus is God.

1 John 5:20
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

John concludes by naming Jesus the true God and eternal life.
Only one who is God can give eternal life, confirming His divine nature completely.

Hebrews 1:8
But of the Son He says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of His kingdom.

God the Father Himself calls the Son "God."
The eternal throne and kingdom belong to Christ, the everlasting God.

How it applies to us today

Jesus is not a lesser being or a created son, He is the full revelation of God. When we pray, worship, and serve, we are not dividing the Father and the Son, for they are one.
The same God who spoke in Genesis, who led Israel through the wilderness, and who sat enthroned in heaven is the same Jesus who walked among men and lives in us today.
When we say Jesus is Lord, we declare that He is the Almighty, the I Am, the Alpha and the Omega.
Our faith, salvation, and eternal hope rest on this truth: God Himself came to redeem us, not through another, but through His own presence in the person of Jesus Christ.

Historical Writers
Ignatius of Antioch called Jesus "our God" in his letters around AD 110.
Polycarp and Justin Martyr both identified Christ as the eternal Logos made flesh.
Irenaeus confirmed the same truth, teaching that the Word was both with God and was God, and that through Him all things were made.
Clement of Rome called Christ "the Lord who gave His life for our salvation."
Tertullian wrote, "Christ Jesus is our God, to whom we owe everything."
Eusebius recorded that early Christians worshiped Christ as God long before the New Testament canon was completed.
