The Open Gates: The Kingdom
Without Walls Revelation 21:24-27 † The open gates symbolize complete and eternal
access to God's presence. Isaiah 60:10-11 † Isaiah's prophecy foreshadowed the
restoration and expansion of God's kingdom to include the nations. John 10:9 † Jesus declared Himself to be the only
entrance, the true gate of the kingdom. Ephesians 2:13-19 † Paul explained that Christ's blood tore down
the wall separating Jew and Gentile. Zechariah 2:4-5 † Zechariah prophesied a Jerusalem without
walls, a foreshadowing of the New Covenant community. Psalm 87:2-6 † The Psalmist saw that even former enemies
would be counted as citizens of Zion. Matthew 16:18-19 † Christ's kingdom would never be overpowered
by death, its gates would remain eternally open. How it applies to us today † This is the fulfilled perspective we proclaim at

By Dan Maines
The nations will walk by
its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.
In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will
never be closed, and they will bring the glory and the honor of the
nations into it, and nothing unclean, and no one who practices
abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose
names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
† There is no
longer any barrier between heaven and earth, for the two have become
one.
† The nations entering through the gates
represent the full inclusion of all peoples in the covenant
promise.
† The Lamb's book of life defines
the true citizenship of the New Jerusalem, those who live in the
light of Christ.
Foreigners will build up
your walls, and their kings will minister to you; for in My wrath I
struck you, and in My favor I have had compassion on you. Your gates
will be open continually; they will not be closed day or night, so
that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, with their kings
led in procession.
†
The "open gates" here are not about physical Jerusalem but
about the spiritual city of peace.
† The
wealth of the nations represents the fruit of redemption, lives
transformed and dedicated to the Lord.
†
God's compassion replaced His wrath, turning judgment into unending
favor and fellowship.
I am the door; if anyone enters
through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find
pasture.
†
Through Him, believers enter into rest, safety, and spiritual
nourishment.
† The "going in and out"
shows continual freedom, not restriction, in relationship with God.
†
The open gates of the New Jerusalem are the everlasting expression of
the open door in Christ.
But now in Christ Jesus
you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of
Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one
and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing in His
flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in
ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new
man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one
body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow
citizens with the saints, and are of God's household.
† The
old divisions have been removed, replaced by the unity of one new
humanity in Christ.
† The open gates of the
New Jerusalem show that access to God is equal and unrestricted.
†
Every believer is now a full citizen of God's household, with no
distinction or exclusion.
And said to him, "Run,
speak to that young man, saying, 'Jerusalem will be inhabited without
walls because of the multitude of men and cattle within it. For I,'
declares the Lord, 'will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be
the glory in her midst.'"
†
God Himself became the protection and glory of His people, not
physical walls or temples.
† The "wall
of fire" represents His presence, guarding and illuminating His
kingdom.
† The multitude inside reflects the
expansion of the gospel to all nations under one Shepherd.
The Lord loves the gates of
Zion more than all the other dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious
things are spoken of you, O city of God! I shall mention Rahab and
Babylon among those who know Me; behold, Philistia and Tyre with
Cush: "This one was born there," they will say. But of Zion
it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her";
and the Most High Himself will establish her.
† The
open gates of the kingdom welcome all who are "born there"
by the Spirit of God.
† The inclusion of
once-hostile nations shows the power of grace that transcends
borders.
† God Himself establishes the city,
and its gates remain open to all who call on His name.
I also say to you that you
are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates
of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the
kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been
loosed in heaven.
†
The authority to bind and loose reflects the Church's role in
administering the open access of the gospel.
†
The victory over Hades ensured that the kingdom's entrance would
never again be closed.
† The open gates of
the New Jerusalem testify to the final defeat of death and the
everlasting dominion of life.
†
The gates of the kingdom are open, there is no wall, no separation,
no exclusion.
† In Christ, we live in
unrestricted fellowship with God and one another.
†
The nations are still streaming into the light of the Lamb through
the witness of the Church.
† We carry the
keys of the kingdom, opening the way for others to enter freely.
†
The open gates declare the eternal truth, God's presence is
accessible, His kingdom complete, and His people forever home.
