The River of Life: Flowing
from the Throne of the Lamb Ezekiel 47:1-2 † Ezekiel's vision of water flowing from the
temple foreshadowed the life that would come from Christ, the true
temple. Ezekiel 47:8-9 † The sea becoming fresh represents the
transformation of the nations once dead in sin. John 7:37-39 † Jesus identified Himself as the source of
Ezekiel's river, the true temple from which living water flows. Revelation 22:1-2 † John's vision completes what Ezekiel began,
the river now flows from the throne of the Lamb, not from a temple
made by hands. Revelation 22:17 † The invitation continues forever, the water
of life is freely available to all who thirst. Isaiah 55:1 † The call of Isaiah finds its answer in
Christ's living water. How it applies to us today † This is the fulfilled perspective we proclaim at

By Dan Maines
Then he brought me back to
the door of the house; and behold, water was flowing from under the
threshold of the house toward the east, for the house faced east. And
the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the
house, from south of the altar. He brought me out by way of the north
gate and led me around on the outside to the outer gate by way of the
gate that faces east. And behold, water was trickling from the south
side.
† The water began as a trickle,
symbolizing the gospel's beginning, and grew into a mighty river
spreading to all nations.
† The eastward flow
represents life moving toward the rising sun, the dawn of the new
covenant.
† This was not a literal river but
a prophetic image of the Spirit flowing from God's presence to the
world.
Then he said to me, "These
waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Arabah;
then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the sea, and the
waters of the sea become fresh. It will come about that every living
creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live.
And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the
others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes."
†
Every living thing where the river flows lives again, symbolizing the
world renewed through the Spirit.
† The
multitude of fish represents the abundance of souls drawn into
Christ's kingdom.
† This prophecy finds its
fulfillment not in a future millennium but in the living kingdom now
flowing with life.
Now on the last day, the great
day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone
is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as
the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of
living water.'" But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who
believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.
†
The Spirit was the promised river that would flow once He was
glorified, beginning at Pentecost.
† The
invitation "come and drink" fulfills the call of Isaiah 55,
offering life freely to all.
† The river
within believers signifies the continual flow of life that never
ceases in the new covenant.
Then he showed me a river
of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God
and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the
river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding
its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the
healing of the nations.
† This represents the fullness
of the Spirit flowing from Christ's completed work, filling the new
creation.
† The tree of life on both sides of
the river shows the unity of heaven and earth, all sustained by the
same source.
† The healing of the nations is
ongoing, not future, as the gospel continues to bring reconciliation
and peace.
The Spirit and the bride
say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come."
And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the
water of life without cost.
†
The Spirit and the bride speak in harmony, showing that the Church is
the living vessel of this invitation.
† The
water of life flows endlessly, proving that redemption is complete
and eternally available.
† There is no
waiting for a future age; the river is flowing now through the
kingdom of God.
Ho! Every one who thirsts, come
to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy
wine and milk without money and without cost.
† The invitation is to
life that cannot be purchased, a gift flowing from the throne of
grace.
† The abundance of the river shows the
fullness of God's provision in the new creation.
†
All are invited to partake freely, for the Lamb has already paid the
price.
†
The river of life is not coming, it's flowing now from the throne of
the Lamb through His people.
† Wherever the
Spirit flows, life replaces death, and healing replaces division.
†
We are called to be channels of that river, carrying His life into
every place we go.
† The nations are still
being healed by this same eternal flow.
† The
living water within us is proof that God's kingdom is complete and
everlasting.
