Revelation 19:1-2 † The multitude praises God for judging
Jerusalem, the great prostitute. Her destruction vindicates the
martyrs. Revelation 19:3 † The imagery of smoke forever mirrors Isaiah
34:10, describing Edom's judgment. It represents permanent
destruction, not unending burning. Revelation 19:4-5 † The twenty-four elders represent the fullness
of God's covenant people, both old and new. Their worship
acknowledges the fulfillment of God's promises. Revelation 19:6-7 † The marriage of the Lamb represents the full
union of Christ and His church after Jerusalem's fall. The old
covenant harlot is judged, and the faithful bride is revealed. Revelation 19:8-9 † The fine linen symbolizes purity and
faithfulness. Unlike the prostitute, the bride is adorned with
righteousness. Revelation 19:10 † John is reminded that worship belongs to God
alone. The essence of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus, proving
that all prophecy pointed to Him and is fulfilled in Him. Revelation 19:11-13 † This is Christ, the divine warrior. His robe
dipped in blood recalls Isaiah 63:3, trampling the winepress of
wrath. Revelation 19:14-15 † The sword from His mouth is the Word of God.
The saints follow clothed in purity, participating in His victory. Revelation 19:16 † This title proclaims His universal
sovereignty. Rome's Caesars claimed lordship, but only Christ is King
of kings. Revelation 19:17-18 † This gruesome feast contrasts with the
marriage supper of the Lamb. While the saints feast with Christ, His
enemies become the feast for judgment. Revelation 19:19-21 † The beast (Nero and Rome's imperial power)
and the false prophet (apostate Israel) are judged. Their destruction
represents the end of their covenantal and political opposition to
Christ. How it applies to us today † Christ reigns as King of kings. His victory
is not future but accomplished in the first-century judgment of His
enemies. † This is the fulfilled perspective we proclaim at

By Dan MainesRevelation 19
After these things I heard
something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,
"Hallelujah! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God,
because His judgments are true and righteous; for He has judged the
great prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her sexual
immorality, and He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on
her."
† Proof, Matthew 23:35-37 links
Jerusalem with killing the prophets and saints, bringing all judgment
upon her.
And a second time they said,
"Hallelujah! Her smoke rises forever and ever."
† Proof,
Jerusalem's destruction was final; she would never rise again as
covenant Babylon.
And the twenty-four elders
and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on
the throne, saying, "Amen. Hallelujah!" And a voice came
from the throne, saying, "Give praise to our God, all you His
bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great."
Then I heard something
like the voice of a great multitude, and like the sound of many
waters, and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,
"Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let's
rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, because the marriage
of the Lamb has come, and His bride has prepared herself."
†
Proof, Paul in Ephesians 5:25-27 describes Christ sanctifying the
church as His bride.
It was given to her to
clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is
the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, "Write:
Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb."
And he said to me, "These are the true words of God."
† Proof, 2 Corinthians 11:2
Paul betrothed the church to Christ as a pure virgin.
Then I fell at his feet to
worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow
servant of yours and your brothers and sisters who hold the testimony
of Jesus; worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of
prophecy."
And I saw heaven opened,
and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful
and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are
a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; and He has a name
written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with
a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
† Proof, His name "The Word of
God" connects to John 1:1. His victory is righteous judgment,
not carnal war.
And the armies which are
in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him
on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it
He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of
iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the
Almighty.
†
Proof, Psalm 2:9 foretold the Messiah ruling with a rod of iron.
And on His robe and on His
thigh He has a name written: "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
Then I saw an angel
standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to
all the birds that fly in midheaven, "Come, assemble for the
great feast of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh
of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of
those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, both free and
slaves, and small and great."
†
Proof, Ezekiel 39:17-20 describes the same imagery in judgment
against Gog.
And I saw the beast and
the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against
Him who sat on the horse and against His army. And the beast was
seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his
presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the
beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive
into the lake of fire, which burns with brimstone. And the rest were
killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the
horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
† Proof, Josephus (Wars 6.9.4)
records Jerusalem's fall as the climactic defeat of the covenant
traitors. Rome's beastly power was soon broken as well, proving
Christ's sovereignty.
† The church is His bride, purified
and secure, called to faithfulness.
† The
marriage supper of the Lamb is our eternal communion with Christ,
contrasted with the judgment of His enemies.
