Revelation 5:1 † The scroll represents God's covenant purposes
and judgment. The fullness of His decrees was sealed, awaiting the
Lamb alone to open. Revelation 5:2-3 † No created being was worthy. This emphasizes
the uniqueness of Christ as Redeemer. Revelation 5:4 † John's weeping revealed the weight of God's
plan being sealed. Without Christ, redemption and judgment could not
be revealed. Revelation 5:5 † The elder identified Christ as both Lion and
Root, fulfilling Genesis 49:9-10 and Isaiah 11:1. He overcame by His
death and resurrection. Revelation 5:6 † Christ is both Lion and Lamb, conquering
through sacrifice. The seven horns symbolize perfect power, and the
seven eyes symbolize perfect knowledge by the Spirit. Revelation 5:7-8 † The Lamb alone is worthy to take the scroll.
The prayers of the saints are part of God's plan, rising as incense
before Him. Revelation 5:9-10 † The song declares redemption through the
Lamb's blood, fulfilling Exodus 19:6 and Revelation 1:6. Christ
purchased people from all nations, making them His priestly kingdom. Revelation 5:11-12 † The sevenfold praise mirrors the completeness
of Christ's worth. His sacrifice secured all honor and authority. Revelation 5:13-14 † Universal worship culminates in this scene.
Creation joins heaven in acknowledging the Lamb's eternal dominion. How it applies to us today † Christ is the only one worthy to open God's
purposes. † This is the fulfilled perspective we proclaim at

By Dan MainesRevelation 5
I saw in the right hand of
Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back,
sealed up with seven seals.
† Ezekiel 2:9-10
describes a similar scroll of lamentations and woes.
And I saw a strong angel
proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll
and to break its seals?" And no one in heaven, or on the earth,
or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it.
Then I began to weep greatly
because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into
it.
And one of the elders said to
me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of
Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the scroll and
its seven seals."
And I saw between the throne
with the four living creatures and the elders a Lamb standing, as if
slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven
Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
†
The Dead Sea Scrolls (1QS 4.4-6) speak of God sending His Spirit
throughout the earth, a parallel image.
And He came and took the
scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He
had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four
elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden
bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
And they sang a new song,
saying, "Worthy are You to take the scroll and to break its
seals, for You were slaughtered, and You purchased people for God
with Your blood from every tribe, language, people, and nation. You
have made them into a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will
reign upon the earth."
Then I looked, and I
heard the voices of many angels around the throne and the living
creatures and the elders, and the number of them was myriads of
myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power,
wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing."
And I heard every created
thing which is in heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, or on
the sea, and all things in them, saying, "To Him who sits on the
throne, and to the Lamb, be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and
the dominion forever and ever." And the four living creatures
were saying, "Amen." And the elders fell down and
worshiped.
†
Chrysostom wrote that the worship of the Lamb with the Father proves
His deity beyond question.
† Redemption is rooted in His
blood, securing our place as His kingdom and priests.
†
Our prayers are incense before His throne, part of His unfolding
plan.
† Worship belongs fully to the Lamb,
who reigns now in glory.
