Who
Are the True Covenant People of God?
Many today assume that the modern nation of Israel, established in
1948, is a continuation of the biblical Israel. But the New
Testament reveals a different truth. As a Preterist, I stand on the
completed work of Christ and the full fulfillment of prophecy.
Scripture shows us that the true Israel of God is not determined by
race, land, or lineage, but by faith in Jesus Christ. Let's walk through the biblical case:
1. Not All Israel Is Israel Romans 9:6-8:
"But
it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not
all Israel who are descended from Israel, nor are they all children
because they are Abraham's descendants, but: 'through Isaac your
descendants shall be named.' That is, it is not the children of the
flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are
regarded as descendants." Paul makes it clear that physical descent from Abraham does
not determine covenant status. God's promises were always centered
on the children of the promise, not the flesh.
2. The True Sons of Abraham Are Those of Faith Galatians 3:7:
"Therefore,
recognize that it is those who are of faith who are sons of
Abraham." Galatians 3:28-29:
"There
is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And
if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs
according to promise." The gospel shattered racial, national, and ethnic barriers.
Whether Jew or Gentile, in Christ we become Abraham's seed. That is
the only covenant line that matters under the New Covenant.
3. The Flesh Counts for Nothing Philippians 3:3:
"For
we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and
take pride in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh." Paul, a Hebrew of Hebrews, discarded his fleshly status as
worthless compared to being found in Christ. He says we
are the true circumcision – those in Christ, not those in
physical Israel.
4. The Old Covenant Is Obsolete Hebrews 8:13:
"When
He said, 'A new covenant,' He has made the first obsolete. But
whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is about to
disappear." The Old Covenant was already decaying and ready to vanish
when Hebrews was written. By 70 AD, with the destruction of the
temple and Jerusalem, the Old Covenant formally ended.
5. The Kingdom Was Taken from Old Covenant Israel Matthew 21:43:
"Therefore
I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and
given to a people producing its fruit." Jesus was speaking to the Jewish leaders. He prophesied that
the kingdom would be taken from them and given to another people –
the church, the body of Christ, composed of believing Jews and
Gentiles.
6. So What About Modern Israel? Ethnic Jews in the land of Israel
today are not God's covenant people simply because of their
ancestry. The physical land, race, or
genealogical descent does not give them a special covenant status. Unless they are in Christ, they are outside the New Covenant
– just like any Gentile.
Conclusion: The Covenant People Are in Christ Alone The New Testament redefines
Israel around Jesus Christ. The promises are fulfilled in Him and
shared with those who are in Him. The Old Covenant was fulfilled
and passed away by 70 AD. There is no longer a covenant nation after the flesh. The
only covenant people today are the faithful in Christ – the true
Israel of God.
Let us not be led by modern politics
or traditions of men, but by the word of God. The New Covenant is
not about a physical temple, land, or race. It is about a kingdom
not of this world, a people born of the Spirit, and a promise
fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Galatians 6:15-16
"For
neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new
creation. And all who will follow this rule, peace and mercy be upon
them, and upon the Israel of God." That is who we are.
