Contemporaries
By Dan Maines
John
was right there with his contemporaries. He wrote to seven actual
churches. The Events John writes about actually happened in the first
century.
Remember audience relevance? What would the
original readers have thought when they read this? John told the
seven churches to expect these things at any moment.
Jesus
has John tell the seven churches in Asia Minor, that he is going to
come very soon to them. To THEM. Does "Behold I AM COMING
QUICKLY" sound like it means 2,000 years, TO THEM? Jesus' Coming
was just like the Fathers when He came in judgment in the Old
Testament and every time it was spiritual, never bodily.
He
promised his return would be within the lifetime of his
contemporaries (Matthew 23:36) His Apostles (Matthew 24:34), and the
1st-century Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:64).
