HOLY
CITY – JERUSALEM: The Harlot of Revelation
Every title and description given to the Harlot City in Revelation
matches Jerusalem. In fact, many of these titles apply only to
first-century Jerusalem. Let scripture interpret scripture. Below
are undeniable scriptural facts to examine: Jerusalem Alone Is Called the
Holy City Only Jerusalem is ever given the title "the Holy City"
throughout scripture. No other city receives this designation. Nehemiah 11:1 – "Now the
leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem, but the rest of the
people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem, the
holy city..." Nehemiah 11:18 – "All the
Levites in the holy city were 284." Isaiah 48:2 – "...they
call themselves after the holy city and lean on the God of
Israel..." Isaiah 52:1 – "Awake,
awake, clothe yourself in your strength, Zion. Clothe yourself with
your beautiful garments, Jerusalem, the holy city..." Daniel 9:24 – "Seventy
weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city..." Matthew 4:5 – "...the
devil took Him along into the holy city and had Him stand on the
pinnacle of the temple..." Matthew 27:53 – "...and
coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the
holy city..." Revelation 11:2 – "...they
will trample the holy city for forty-two months." Revelation 21:2 – "And I
saw the holy city, New Jerusalem..." Revelation 22:19 – "...God will take away his part
from the tree of life and from the holy city..." Conclusion: The
phrase "holy city" is applied always and only to
Jerusalem. Revelation 11:2 places the trampling of the "holy
city" within the prophetic framework of judgment. This is
Mosaic Jerusalem.
Jerusalem Is Also Called Sodom Revelation 11:8 refers to the city where the Lord was crucified
as "Sodom" and "Egypt." This is unmistakably
Jerusalem. Old Testament prophets had already labeled Jerusalem with
these names due to her sin. Isaiah 1:10 – "Hear the
word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom. Listen to the instruction of
our God, you people of Gomorrah!" Isaiah 3:9 – "...they
display their sin like Sodom..." Jeremiah 23:14 – "...Jerusalem
also, I have seen a horrible thing... they are all like Sodom to
Me..." Lamentations 4:6 – "The punishment of the daughter of
my people is greater than the punishment of Sodom..." Conclusion: Scripture
repeatedly equates Jerusalem with Sodom, due to her covenantal
unfaithfulness and rebellion.
Jerusalem Was the Unfaithful
Harlot Note: In the following, [harlot] is
used in place with the “P” word that facebook does not
allow(even in scripture been there done that). The most consistent and scathing imagery tied to Jerusalem
throughout the prophets is that of an unfaithful harlot. The
language is overwhelming and consistent: Isaiah 1:21 – "How the
faithful city has become a [harlot]..." Jeremiah 2:20 – "For long
ago I broke your yoke and tore off your restraints; but you said,
‘I will not serve!' For on every high hill and under every leafy
tree you have lain down like a [harlot]." Jeremiah 3:1, 3:8-9 – God
declares He gave faithless Israel a certificate of divorce because
of her adulteries. Judah also played the harlot. Ezekiel 16 & 23 – These
chapters go into detail naming Jerusalem's harlotries with Egypt,
Assyria, and Babylon, even saying she surpassed her sisters Sodom
and Samaria. Hosea 1:2 – "Go, take for
yourself a woman inclined to infidelity, and children of
infidelity; for the land commits flagrant infidelity by abandoning
the Lord." Hosea 4:12-15 – "My people
consult their wooden idol, and their diviner's wand informs them...
they have played the [harlot]..." Micah 1:7 – "All her idols
will be smashed... for from [harlot]'s earnings she collected them,
and to the earnings of a [harlot] they will return." Matthew 12:39 – "An evil
and adulterous generation craves a sign..." Mark 8:38 – "...in this adulterous and sinful
generation..." Conclusion: From
Isaiah to Jesus, the accusation is clear. Jerusalem had become a
harlot. Revelation continues this line of testimony, identifying
first-century Jerusalem as the harlot woman. Final Word: Every title given to the Harlot in
Revelation finds its origin in Old Testament accusations against
Jerusalem. No other city fits the description so completely. The
Book of Revelation is not inventing new charges, but confirming old
ones. First-century Jerusalem was the covenant-breaking wife, the
holy city turned harlot, the Sodom of her day. Let scripture confirm
it.
