How does
this verse support or refute the idea of universal salvation (Obadiah
1:16)? Obadiah 1:16 refutes universal
salvation, not supports it. Here's why: "For just as you drank on My holy
mountain, all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and
swallow, and become as if they had never existed." This is a picture of complete judgment,
not restoration. The "cup" in prophetic
language often symbolizes God's wrath (Jeremiah 25:15-17, Isaiah
51:17, Revelation 14:10). The nations are said to drink
continually, meaning the judgment is full and inescapable. The outcome? They will become as if
they had never existed, not redeemed, not restored, but wiped out. If universal salvation were true, this
verse would have to be reworded to say, "They will drink, be
corrected, and restored to life." But instead, the result is
obliteration, not salvation. This supports the fulfilled view that
God judged the nations who opposed Him, and not everyone ends up
saved.
