Tarry?
He Did Not. Hebrews 10:37
"For
yet in a very little while, He who is coming will come, and will not
delay." That verse was written just a
very, very little while before AD 70. It was written to encourage the
believers who were seeing the signs and expected the judgment. It says plainly, He will not
delay. The coming judgment on Jerusalem was not centuries away, it
was at the door. FUTURISTS, please exegete this honestly: Hebrews 10:37 does not say "in
a far-off time" or "one day". It says "in a very, very
little while" and "will not delay". This was written to first-century
Christians who were enduring persecution and eagerly awaiting
deliverance. And they saw the Day approaching just as verse 25 says. Hebrews 10:22-37 shows this clearly: The faithful were told to hold
fast, because the promise was near. Verse 25 says, "so much the
more as you see the Day approaching". Verse 27 warns of "a certain
fearful expectation of judgment". That judgment did not tarry, it fell in AD 70, just as
promised. The first-century believers were not disappointed. They eagerly waited because they
were told He would not tarry. The glorification they awaited
was tied to their resurrection hope, the fulness of everlasting
life. Philippians 3:20-21 and Colossians 1:27 affirm this hope:
"Christ in you, the hope of glory". The question is not when will He
come?
The question is do we believe what He said? He came. He did not tarry.
Hebrews 10:37 was fulfilled.
