Satan's
Little Season (SLS) Revelation 12 shows Satan was already cast down
Part 2 of 4 As a preterist, I
reject the idea that we are still waiting for Satan's so-called
"little season" in the future. Revelation already provides
the timing, purpose, and end of Satan's role, all of which were
fulfilled in the first century. Let's walk through the biblical
case. Revelation 12:9-10 says,
"And
the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called
the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown
down to the earth... Now the salvation, and the power, and the
kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come."
This
happened in the first century, during the time of Christ's death,
resurrection, and ascension. The Kingdom came then, not at
some future point. He was cast out of heaven and could no longer accuse the brethren
(verse 10). That means the cross removed his legal power to condemn.
But he was still active on earth. Revelation 12:12 says,
"Woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing
that he has only a short time."
This "short time"
is not thousands of years. It refers to the generation leading up to
the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. There is no mention of a
"long gap" followed by a "little season." The
short time was already underway
after he was cast out. Revelation 20:1-3 describes Satan being bound so he would "not
deceive the nations any longer." That's exactly what the gospel
did, break the power of deception over the Gentiles. Paul writes in
Colossians 2:15,
"When He had disarmed the rulers and
authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over
them through Him."
Satan was defeated and restrained from
preventing the nations from receiving the truth. The gospel went out
to all nations (Colossians 1:23). Revelation 20:3 says,
"...after these things he must be
released for a short time."
This matches Revelation
12:12's "short time" of great wrath. That short season
began when Satan was cast down to earth and ended when Jerusalem,
his base of operation, was destroyed. This is confirmed in
Revelation 20:9,
"And they came up on the broad plain of
the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved
city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them."
The
"beloved city" is Jerusalem, which was judged in AD 70.
The rebellion and destruction both happened in that first century
context. There's no room for a future "little season." Revelation 20:10 says,
"And the devil who deceived them
was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone..."
This is
the final end of Satan, not a future threat. He was cast down,
bound, released for a short time, and then destroyed. Paul affirms
this in Romans 16:20,
"The God of peace will soon crush
Satan under your feet."
Paul wrote that in the first
century. "Soon" means soon, not 2,000 years later. Satan's "short time"
began after he was cast out of heaven The gospel bound him from
deceiving the nations He was released to stir up
persecution and rebellion That rebellion centered on
Jerusalem and ended in AD 70 He was judged and cast into the lake of fire The idea of a future "little
season" is not supported by the text. It's based on futurist
assumptions, not the timing Revelation actually gives.
