future. John says "it is the last hour"
in the present tense, not the future. He says "many antichrists have
appeared", proving the prophecy was already unfolding in his
time. The "last hour" refers to the
closing period of the Old Covenant age, which culminated in AD 70
with the destruction of Jerusalem. The antichrists were first-century
deceivers (see also 1 John 2:22 and 2 John 7), not a future end-times
figure. In short, 1 John 2:18 was fulfilled in
John's own generation, not ours.
