Resurrection
and the End of the Age Daniel 12:1-7 gives a
clear prophecy about the end of the age and the timing of the
resurrection. Verse 2 speaks of the
resurrection. Verse 6 asks, "How long...?" Verse 7 answers: It would happen when the power of the
holy people is completely shattered. Israel's only true power was its
covenant relationship with God. So, the resurrection would occur
when that covenant relationship was completely destroyed. Daniel 12 predicted the end of the age
and the resurrection. The only age the Bible ever predicted to end
was the Old Covenant age of Israel. In Matthew 13:39-40, Jesus confirms there were only two ages: "This age" (Old
Covenant) "The age to come" (New Covenant) Jesus is the Resurrection and the
Life-Giving Spirit. Ephesians 2:4-6 says:
"Even
when we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with
Christ... and raised us up together, and seated us with Him in the
heavenly places." We were dead - but now we’re alive
in Christ.
We have eternal life and cannot die spiritually. So,
we don't need a resurrection. When our bodies die, we go straight to
heaven. Jesus said:
"I am the
resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even if
he dies; and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die."
(John 11:25-26) He was the Resurrection for those who
died under the Old Covenant.
He is the Life for those who live
under the New. Under the New Covenant, there is no
spiritual death - and where there is no death, there is no need for
resurrection. The resurrection was not for
us - the living. It was for the dead.
For
those who died under the law, under works.
Not
for those who now live in Christ, by grace.
