Introduction
One
of the most overlooked truths in Scripture is that God's dwelling
place was never meant to remain in a physical temple made with hands
forever. From Eden to AD 70, Scripture reveals a progressive
movement of His presence until the final shift into His people. This
is not opinion, it is Scripture interpreting Scripture.
GOD'S DWELLING IN THE
BEGINNING
• Genesis 3:8 - Adam and Eve heard the
sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.
God dwelt among His creation. Sin broke that direct fellowship.
•
Exodus 25:8 - God commanded, "Have them construct a sanctuary
for Me, so that I may dwell among them." The tabernacle became
the visible place of God's presence.
THE GLORY FILLED THE HOUSE
•
1 Kings 8:10-11 - When Solomon dedicated the temple, the glory of
the Lord filled the house so that the priests could not stand to
minister. This was the visible sign that God's presence was among
His covenant people.
THE PROPHETS FORETOLD A
SHIFT
• Jeremiah 31:31-33 - God promised a new
covenant, not like the covenant made when He brought them out of
Egypt, but one written on their hearts. This meant the place of His
law and presence would change.
• Isaiah 66:1 - "Heaven
is My throne and the earth is My footstool. Where then is a house
you could build for Me? And where is a place that I may rest?"
God's true dwelling could never be confined to a building.
JESUS ANNOUNCES THE CHANGE
•
John 2:19-21 - Jesus said, "Destroy this temple, and in three
days I will raise it up." He was speaking of the temple of His
body. The temple was shifting from stone to the Living Temple,
Christ Himself.
• Matthew 23:38 - "Behold, your house is
being left to you desolate." This was the death sentence on the
Old Covenant temple.
THE APOSTLES CONFIRM THE
MOVE
• 1 Corinthians 3:16 - "Do you not know
that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you?" The dwelling place is no longer a building in Jerusalem,
it is the body of Christ.
• 2 Corinthians 6:16 - "For we
are the temple of the living God; just as God said, ‘I will dwell
among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they
shall be My people.'"
AD 70, THE FINAL TRANSFER OF
DWELLING
• Hebrews 9:8 - The Holy Spirit signified
that the way into the holy place had not yet been disclosed while
the first tabernacle was still standing. When the temple fell in AD
70, the Old Covenant system was completely removed.
•
Revelation 21:2-3 - "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the
people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people,
and God Himself will be among them." This is the fulfilled
reality after the passing of the old heaven and earth (Old
Covenant).
Conclusion
From
Eden, to the tabernacle, to the temple, to Christ, and finally into
His people, the dwelling place of God moved. The destruction of
Jerusalem in AD 70 was not simply judgment, it was the public
declaration that God's presence had fully moved into His people. The
kingdom was established, the New Covenant complete, and the prophecy
fulfilled.
