Zechariah 13 The Fountain Opened And The Shepherd Struck Fulfilled

Introduction

Zechariah 13 continues the same context from chapter 12, the mourning over the One they pierced, now showing the result, cleansing, removal of sin, and judgment falling on the old covenant system (Zechariah 12:10).

This is not future, this is the fulfillment tied directly to the death of Christ and the judgment of Israel in that generation (Matthew 24:34).

The chapter moves from cleansing, to the end of false prophecy, to the striking of the Shepherd, and finally the refining of the remnant (Zechariah 13:1-9).

Zechariah 13:1

On that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity.

The phrase in that day connects directly to the events surrounding the crucifixion and the destruction of Jerusalem, not a distant future (Matthew 24:30-34).

The fountain is the cleansing power of Christ's blood, fulfilled at the cross, providing true forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:14).

This matches the promise of cleansing fulfilled in Christ, not in a future system (1 John 1:7).

Zechariah 13:2

And it will come about on that day, declares the Lord of armies, that I will eliminate the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered, and I will also remove the prophets and the unclean spirit from the land.

The removal of idols and false prophets points to the end of the old covenant system that had become corrupted (Matthew 23:13-36).

By AD 70, the temple system, false religious leadership, and corrupt priesthood were completely removed (Luke 21:20-22).

Jesus warned of this judgment when He said their house would be left desolate (Matthew 23:38).

Zechariah 13:3

And if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who gave birth to him will say to him, You shall not live, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the Lord, and his father and mother who gave birth to him will pierce him through when he prophesies.

This shows the complete rejection of false prophecy, even within families, demonstrating how serious the cleansing would be (Deuteronomy 13:6-10).

It reflects the standard God already gave concerning false prophets under the law (Deuteronomy 18:20).

In fulfillment, the old prophetic system ended because Christ is the final and complete revelation of God (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Zechariah 13:4

Also it will come about on that day that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies, and they will not put on a hairy robe in order to deceive.

False prophets would be exposed and ashamed, no longer able to deceive the people (Matthew 7:15-23).

The outward signs of prophetic authority would be stripped away, showing their fraud (Matthew 23:27-28).

This aligns with Jesus exposing the scribes and Pharisees as hypocrites (Matthew 23:13).

Zechariah 13:5

Instead, he will say, I am not a prophet, I am a farmer, for a man has sold me as a slave from my youth.

This shows the fear and exposure of false prophets, denying their identity once judgment comes (John 9:22).

The system that supported false prophecy collapses under the weight of truth (Hebrews 8:13).

It reflects the transition from shadow to fulfillment in Christ (Colossians 2:17).

Zechariah 13:6

And one will say to him, What are these wounds between your arms Then he will say, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

This points directly to Christ, wounded by His own people, Israel (John 1:11).

Jesus was rejected and crucified by those He came to save, fulfilling this prophecy (Acts 2:23).

It shows the betrayal and rejection that came from within His own covenant people (Matthew 26:47-50).

Zechariah 13:7

Awake, sword, against My Shepherd, and against the Man who is My Associate, declares the Lord of armies. Strike the Shepherd so that the sheep may be scattered, and I will turn My hand against the little ones.

This is clearly fulfilled in Christ, the Shepherd struck at the cross (Matthew 26:31).

Jesus Himself quotes this verse, proving its fulfillment in His arrest (Mark 14:27).

The scattering of the sheep happened when the disciples fled and during the coming judgment (John 16:32).

Zechariah 13:8

And it will come about in all the land, declares the Lord, that two parts in it will be cut off and perish, but the third will be left in it.

This describes the massive destruction that came upon Israel in AD 70 (Luke 21:24).

Josephus records that the majority perished during the siege of Jerusalem (Wars 5-6).

The third represents the remnant preserved through Christ (Romans 11:5).

Zechariah 13:9

And I will bring the third part through the fire, refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them, I will say, They are My people, and they will say, The Lord is my God.

The remnant is refined through trial, representing the faithful believers (1 Peter 1:6-7).

This is fulfilled in the early church, purified through persecution and covenant transition (Acts 14:22).

It fulfills the covenant promise that they would be His people and He would be their God (2 Corinthians 6:16).

Historical References

Josephus records the destruction of Jerusalem and the loss of life, confirming the cutting off of the majority (Wars of the Jews, Book 5-6).

Eusebius records that believers fled Jerusalem before its destruction, preserving the remnant (Ecclesiastical History, Book 3).

Tacitus confirms the fall of Jerusalem and devastation under Rome (Histories 5.13).

How it applies to us today

The fountain has already been opened, we don't wait for cleansing, it's already available in Christ (Hebrews 10:22).

False systems have already been judged, we stand in the completed work of Christ (Hebrews 8:13).

We are the refined people of God, tested and proven through faith (1 Peter 1:7).

We belong to Him now, and He hears us because we are His covenant people (John 10:27-28).

Everything Christ promised has already been fulfilled, and we live in that reality today (2 Corinthians 1:20).
