Ezekiel 48 The Final Division Of The Land And The Name Of The City Fulfilled
Introduction
Ezekiel 48 brings everything to its final conclusion, the land is fully divided, every tribe receives its inheritance, and the city is given a new name, The Lord is there. This is not about a future earthly land allotment, it's about the complete fulfillment of God's covenant promises through Christ and the establishment of His dwelling among His people.
The vision closes where all prophecy points, not to physical territory, but to the presence of God with His people in the New Covenant.
This chapter ties directly into Revelation 21:3, where God dwells with man, showing that what Ezekiel saw was fulfilled, not postponed.
Ezekiel 48:1
Now these are the names of the tribes: from the northern extremity, beside the way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, as far as Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus toward the north beside Hamath, running from east to west, Dan, one portion.
The equal distribution shows order and completeness, not partial fulfillment, but total fulfillment. (Joshua 21:43)
Dan being included shows restoration, even tribes once associated with idolatry are accounted for. (Genesis 49:16-17)
This points to the inclusion of all God's people in Christ, not a selective future kingdom. (Galatians 3:28)
Ezekiel 48:2
Beside the border of Dan, from the east side to the west side, Asher, one portion.
Each tribe receiving a portion shows full participation in the promise. (Joshua 21:43)
This points to shared inheritance in Christ, not physical territory. (Romans 8:17)
No tribe is excluded, showing covenant completion.
Ezekiel 48:3
Beside the border of Asher, from the east side to the west side, Naphtali, one portion.
The repetition emphasizes order and certainty. (1 Corinthians 14:33)
God's promises are structured and fulfilled, not random. (2 Corinthians 1:20)
The inheritance is secure in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:4
Beside the border of Naphtali, from the east side to the west side, Manasseh, one portion.
Even divided tribes like Manasseh are fully restored. (Genesis 48:19)
This shows reconciliation and unity. (Ephesians 2:14)
Fulfillment removes division.
Ezekiel 48:5
Beside the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west side, Ephraim, one portion.
Ephraim's inclusion shows restoration of what was scattered. (Hosea 1:10)
This points to the gathering of all God's people. (John 11:52)
Fulfillment brings all into one.
Ezekiel 48:6
Beside the border of Ephraim, from the east side to the west side, Reuben, one portion.
The structure continues to show completeness. (Numbers 26:52-56)
Every tribe receives equally.
This reflects unity in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:7
Beside the border of Reuben, from the east side to the west side, Judah, one portion.
Judah, the royal tribe, is included among equals. (Genesis 49:10)
This shows no earthly hierarchy remains. (Matthew 23:8)
Christ alone is King.
Ezekiel 48:8
Beside the border of Judah, from the east side to the west side, shall be the contribution which you shall set aside, twenty-five thousand cubits in width, and in length like one of the portions, from the east side to the west side, with the sanctuary in the middle of it.
The holy portion in the center shows God is at the center of His people, not geographically, but covenantally. (Ephesians 2:20-22)
The placement of the sanctuary in the middle shows God's presence among His people, fulfilled in Christ dwelling in us. (John 14:23)
This isn't about land, it's about relationship and access to God. (Hebrews 10:19-22)
Ezekiel 48:9
The contribution which you shall set aside for the Lord shall be twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width.
The precise measurements show divine order. (Hebrews 8:5)
This points to a perfect spiritual reality.
God's design is intentional and fulfilled.
Ezekiel 48:10
The holy contribution shall be for these, for the priests: toward the north twenty-five thousand in length, toward the west ten thousand in width, toward the east ten thousand in width, and toward the south twenty-five thousand in length; and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in its midst.
The priests receiving a holy portion shows a set-apart people, fulfilled in the New Covenant priesthood. (1 Peter 2:5)
The Levitical system pointed forward to a greater priesthood, fulfilled in Christ and His body. (Hebrews 7:11-12)
Believers now are the priesthood, not tied to land, but to Christ. (Revelation 1:6)
Ezekiel 48:11
It shall be for the priests who are sanctified of the sons of Zadok, who have kept My charge, who did not go astray when the sons of Israel went astray as the Levites went astray.
Faithful priests are highlighted. (Ezekiel 44:15)
This points to faithful believers. (2 Timothy 2:12)
Faithfulness matters in covenant fulfillment.
Ezekiel 48:12
It shall be a special portion of land for them, a most holy portion, beside the border of the Levites.
The inheritance is from God. (James 1:17)
Not earned, but given.
Fulfilled in grace.
Ezekiel 48:13
Beside the border of the priests, the Levites shall have an area twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width; the entire length shall be twenty-five thousand and the width ten thousand.
The Levites also receive their portion. (Numbers 18:20)
Their inheritance was always God Himself.
Fulfilled in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:14
Also they shall not sell or exchange any of it, nor shall this choice portion of the land pass over to another; for it is holy to the Lord.
This shows permanence. (Hebrews 12:28)
The inheritance can't be removed.
God's promises are secure.
Ezekiel 48:15
The remainder, five thousand cubits in width and twenty-five thousand in length, shall be for common use for the city, for dwellings and for open spaces; and the city shall be in its midst.
The distinction between holy and common areas shows order, but under the New Covenant, access is expanded. (Matthew 27:51)
The tearing of the veil shows the removal of separation, what was once restricted is now open. (Hebrews 9:8-10)
This vision shows structure, but fulfillment shows access for all in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:16
These shall be its measurements: the north side four thousand five hundred cubits, the south side four thousand five hundred, the east side four thousand five hundred, and the west side four thousand five hundred.
Again, order and design. (1 Corinthians 14:40)
God establishes structure.
Fulfillment reflects perfection.
Ezekiel 48:17
The city shall have open spaces: on the north two hundred and fifty cubits, on the south two hundred and fifty, on the east two hundred and fifty, and on the west two hundred and fifty.
The city expands outward. (Isaiah 54:2)
This points to growth of God's people.
Not limited geographically.
Ezekiel 48:18
The remainder of the length alongside the holy contribution shall be ten thousand cubits toward the east and ten thousand toward the west; and it shall be alongside the holy contribution, and its produce shall be food for the workers of the city.
Provision is made for all. (Matthew 6:33)
God supplies His people.
Fulfilled spiritually.
Ezekiel 48:19
The workers of the city, out of all the tribes of Israel, shall cultivate it.
All tribes serve together. (Ephesians 4:4-6)
Unity in function.
One body in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:20
The entire contribution shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand; you shall set aside the holy contribution, a square, with the property of the city.
Total completeness.
Nothing lacking.
Full fulfillment.
Ezekiel 48:21
The remainder shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy contribution and of the property of the city.
The prince represents leadership under God. (Ezekiel 34:24)
This points to Christ as ruler.
Not a future earthly ruler.
Ezekiel 48:22
Exclusive of the property of the Levites and the property of the city, which are in the midst of that which belongs to the prince, everything between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.
Everything is centered together.
God, people, leadership unified.
Fulfilled in Christ.
Ezekiel 48:23
As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, Benjamin, one portion.
The remaining tribes are included.
No one left out.
Full covenant completion.
Ezekiel 48:24
Beside the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, Simeon, one portion.
Continued inclusion.
Order maintained.
Fulfillment confirmed.
Ezekiel 48:25
Beside the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, Issachar, one portion.
The pattern continues.
No break in structure.
God's promises stand.
Ezekiel 48:26
Beside the border of Issachar, from the east side to the west side, Zebulun, one portion.
Every tribe accounted for.
Completion is emphasized.
Fulfillment is total.
Ezekiel 48:27
Beside the border of Zebulun, from the east side to the west side, Gad, one portion.
The final tribes receive their inheritance.
Nothing missing.
God's plan is finished.
Ezekiel 48:28
Beside the border of Gad, at the south side toward the south, the border shall run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribath-kadesh, to the brook of Egypt, to the Great Sea.
The boundaries are fully defined.
This shows completeness.
Nothing left undefined.
Ezekiel 48:29
This is the land which you shall divide by lot to the tribes of Israel for an inheritance, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God.
This confirms inheritance language.
Fulfilled in Christ. (Ephesians 1:11)
Not future land.
Ezekiel 48:30
These are the exits of the city: on the north side, four thousand five hundred cubits by measure,
The gates named after the tribes show full inclusion of all Israel, fulfilled spiritually in the New Covenant people. (Revelation 21:12)
The city represents the people of God, not a future physical Jerusalem. (Hebrews 12:22)
Every tribe being represented shows completeness and fulfillment, not future expectation.
Ezekiel 48:31
and the gates of the city shall be named after the tribes of Israel.
The twelve gates represent fullness of God's people. (Revelation 21:12-13)
This is covenant symbolism.
Fulfilled in the New Jerusalem.
Ezekiel 48:32
On the east side, four thousand five hundred cubits, and three gates: the gate of Joseph, one; the gate of Benjamin, one; the gate of Dan, one.
Full tribal representation continues.
Nothing missing.
Complete inclusion.
Ezekiel 48:33
On the south side, four thousand five hundred cubits, and three gates: the gate of Simeon, one; the gate of Issachar, one; the gate of Zebulun, one.
All tribes are represented equally.
Unity in the city.
Fulfillment of promise.
Ezekiel 48:34
On the west side, four thousand five hundred cubits, and their three gates: the gate of Gad, one; the gate of Asher, one; the gate of Naphtali, one.
Every tribe has access.
No exclusion.
Fulfilled covenant access.
Ezekiel 48:35
The city shall be eighteen thousand cubits round about; and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.
This is the climax of the entire book, God dwelling with His people. (Revelation 21:3)
The name The Lord is there shows fulfillment, not anticipation, God is already present with His people through Christ. (John 1:14)
This is not a future temple, it's the present reality of God's dwelling in His people. (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Historical References
Josephus described the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the temple system, confirming that the old covenant order passed away.
Eusebius recorded that believers understood the fall of Jerusalem as the fulfillment of prophecy and the shift to a spiritual kingdom.
Irenaeus wrote about the church as the dwelling place of God, not a physical temple.

How It Applies To Us Today
We don't look for a future land division, we live in the fulfillment of God's presence now.
God isn't dwelling in a temple made with hands, He's dwelling in His people.
The kingdom isn't coming, it's here, and we're part of it right now.
Our identity isn't tied to geography, it's tied to Christ.
The promise The Lord is there is already true for us today.
