Ezekiel 22 The Bloodshed Of Jerusalem And The Search For A Righteous Man

Introduction

This chapter exposes the full corruption of Jerusalem before its destruction, showing that every level of society had turned from God.
From the fulfilled perspective, this isn't just ancient history, it's the same covenant pattern that reached its full judgment in AD 70.
God lays out the charges clearly, proving His judgment is righteous and deserved.

Ezekiel 22:1-2
Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then cause her to know all her abominations.

God calls Jerusalem a bloody city because of violence and covenant unfaithfulness, this same charge appears again in Matthew 23:35.
The prophet is commanded to expose sin openly, showing that truth must be declared, not hidden, Ephesians 5:11.
This connects directly to Christ's generation, where Jerusalem is again held accountable for bloodshed, Matthew 23:37.

Ezekiel 22:3-5
And you shall say, Thus says the Lord God, A city shedding blood in her midst, so that her time will come, and that makes idols, contrary to her interest, for defilement. You have become guilty by the blood which you have shed, and defiled by your idols which you have made; so you have brought your day near and have come to your years. Therefore I have made you a disgrace to the nations, and a mocking to all the lands. Those who are near and those who are far from you will mock you, you of ill repute, full of turmoil.

Their sin brought their judgment near, they caused their own destruction, Luke 19:43-44.
Idolatry and bloodshed always go together, rejecting God leads to moral collapse, Romans 1:28-32.
The public shame before the nations mirrors what happened in AD 70, Luke 21:24.

Ezekiel 22:6-12
Behold, the leaders of Israel, each according to his power, have been in you for the purpose of shedding blood. They have treated father and mother lightly within you; they have oppressed the stranger in your midst; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you. You have despised My holy things and profaned My Sabbaths. Slanderous men have been in you for the purpose of shedding blood, and in you they have eaten at the mountain shrines; in your midst they have committed acts of lewdness. In you they have uncovered their fathers nakedness; in you they have humbled her who was unclean in her impurity. One has committed abomination with his neighbors wife, and another has lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in you has humbled his sister, his fathers daughter. In you they have taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken interest and profits, and you have injured your neighbors for gain by oppression, and you have forgotten Me, declares the Lord God.

Leadership was corrupt, the princes used power for violence instead of justice, Micah 3:1-3.
Family order collapsed, showing covenant breakdown at every level, Romans 1:30.
Greed replaced righteousness, proving they had forgotten God, James 5:1-6.

Ezekiel 22:13-16
Behold, then, I have struck My hand at your dishonest gain which you have acquired and at the bloodshed which is among you. Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken and will act. And I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the lands, and I will purge your uncleanness from you. And you will profane yourself in the sight of the nations, and you will know that I am the Lord.

God's judgment is certain, no one can stand against it, Hebrews 10:31.
The scattering among the nations points forward to the Roman destruction, Luke 21:24.
Judgment serves to purge corruption from among His people, Malachi 3:2-3.

Ezekiel 22:17-22
Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me; all of them are bronze and tin and iron and lead in the furnace; they are the dross of silver. Therefore, thus says the Lord God, Because all of you have become dross, therefore, behold, I am going to gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. As they gather silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into the furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath, and I will lay you there and melt you. And I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it. As silver is melted in the furnace, so you will be melted in the midst of it; and you will know that I, the Lord, have poured out My wrath on you.

Israel is called dross, meaning they lost purity and value, Isaiah 1:22.
The furnace represents intense judgment fulfilled in the siege of Jerusalem, Luke 23:28-30.
God exposes what is true and what is corrupt through judgment, 1 Peter 4:17.

Ezekiel 22:23-29
Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Son of man, say to her, You are a land that is not cleansed or rained on in the day of indignation. There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. Her priests have done violence to My Law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her officials within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and destroying lives in order to get dishonest gain. Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, Thus says the Lord God, when the Lord has not spoken. The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery, and they have wronged the poor and needy and have oppressed the stranger without justice.

Every group is guilty, prophets, priests, princes, and people, total corruption, Jeremiah 5:31.
False prophets reinforced sin instead of correcting it, Matthew 7:15.
This same condition existed in Jesus' day, Matthew 15:14.

Ezekiel 22:30-31
I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. So I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads, declares the Lord God.

God found no one righteous to intercede, showing total spiritual collapse, Psalm 14:2-3.
This points to Christ as the only true mediator, 1 Timothy 2:5.
Without an intercessor, judgment came fully in AD 70, Luke 19:41-44.
