Ezekiel 16 The Exposed
Harlotry Of Jerusalem And The Faithfulness Of God
By Dan Maines
Introduction
†
This chapter lays everything bare, Israel's origin, her rise by God's
mercy, her corruption, and her judgment, and it shows us that
everything she became was because of God, yet everything she lost
came from her own rebellion.
† Ezekiel 16
isn't symbolic fluff, it's a direct accusation against Jerusalem,
exposing covenant unfaithfulness in the strongest terms Scripture
uses.
† From the fulfilled perspective, this
isn't just history, it leads directly to the judgment that came in AD
70, when the covenant-breaking city was finally destroyed just as
Jesus said.
Ezekiel 16:1-5
Then the word
of the LORD came to me, saying, Son of man, make known to Jerusalem
her abominations and say, This is what the Lord GOD says to
Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are from the land of the
Canaanite, your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. As
for your birth, on the day you were born your navel was not cut, nor
were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with
salt or even wrapped in cloths. No eye looked with pity on you to do
any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you
were thrown out into the open field, for you were loathed on the day
you were born.
† God starts by showing Israel
had nothing, no identity, no worth, no covenant, she was abandoned
and unclean (Deuteronomy 7:7-8).
† This
destroys the idea that Israel earned anything, everything begins with
God's mercy, not their righteousness (Titus 3:5).
†
From the fulfilled perspective, this reminds us that the Old Covenant
system was never about their worth, it was about God's purpose, which
they later corrupted (Romans 9:16).
Ezekiel 16:6-8
When
I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood, I said to you
while you were in your blood, Live! Yes, I said to you while you were
in your blood, Live! I made you numerous like plants of the field.
Then you grew up, became tall, and reached the age for fine
ornaments; your breasts were formed and your hair had grown. Yet you
were naked and bare. Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold,
you were at the time for love; so I spread My garment over you and
covered your nakedness. I also swore to you and entered into a
covenant with you so that you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
†
This is covenant language, God chose her, covered her, and entered
into covenant, pointing directly to Sinai (Exodus 19:5-6).
†
The phrase spread my skirt over thee shows protection, marriage, and
ownership, God made Israel His bride.
† This
sets up the severity of what follows, because their sin isn't just
rebellion, it's adultery against covenant love (Jeremiah
31:32).
Ezekiel 16:9-14
Then I bathed you
with water, washed off your blood from you, and anointed you with
oil. I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of
fine leather on your feet; and I wrapped you in fine linen and
covered you with silk. I adorned you with jewelry, put bracelets on
your wrists and a necklace around your neck. I also put a ring in
your nostril, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your
head. So you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of
fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey,
and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty.
Then your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty,
for it was perfect because of My splendor which I had bestowed on
you, declares the Lord GOD.
† Everything
Israel had came from God, her beauty was His glory on her
(Deuteronomy 4:6-8).
† This shows the temple,
priesthood, law, and blessings were all gifts, not achievements.
†
From the fulfilled perspective, this exposes why judgment was so
severe, they took what was God's and turned it into idolatry (Romans
1:21-23).
Ezekiel 16:15-19
But you trusted
in your beauty and played the prostitute because of your fame, and
you poured out your obscene practices on every passer-by to whom it
might be due. You took some of your clothes, made for yourself high
places of various colors, and played the prostitute on them, which
should never come about nor happen. You also took your beautiful
jewels made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and
made for yourself male images so that you could play the prostitute
with them. Then you took your embroidered cloth and covered them, and
offered My oil and My incense before them. Also My bread which I gave
you, fine flour, oil, and honey with which I fed you, you would offer
before them for a soothing aroma; so it happened, declares the Lord
GOD.
† They took what God gave and used it
for idolatry, this is the definition of covenant betrayal (Hosea
2:8).
† Their sin wasn't ignorance, it was
willful corruption of God's blessings.
† This
directly parallels the first century, where the leaders corrupted the
temple system for profit and power (Matthew 21:13).
Ezekiel
16:20-22
Furthermore, you took your sons and daughters
whom you had borne to Me and sacrificed them to idols to be devoured.
Were your obscene practices so insignificant? You slaughtered My
children and offered them up to idols by making them pass through the
fire. And besides all your abominations and your obscene practices,
you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and
bare and squirming in your blood.
† Child
sacrifice shows how far they fell, from being saved by God to killing
their own children in idolatry (2 Kings 21:6).
†
God calls them my children, showing covenant ownership, they
sacrificed what belonged to Him.
† This level
of corruption explains why judgment was unavoidable (2 Chronicles
36:16).
Ezekiel 16:35-43
Therefore, you
prostitute, hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD
says: Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness
uncovered through your obscene practices with your lovers and with
all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your sons
which you gave to idols, therefore, behold, I am going to gather all
your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you
loved and all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you
from every direction and expose your nakedness to them so that they
may see all your nakedness.
† Judgment comes
through the very nations they trusted in, showing God's control over
history (Isaiah 10:5-6).
† This is exactly
what happened, foreign powers came and destroyed Jerusalem
repeatedly, culminating in AD 70.
† Jesus
confirms this judgment language when He says their house would be
left desolate (Matthew 23:38).
Ezekiel
16:60-63
Nevertheless, I will remember My covenant with
you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting
covenant with you. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed
when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and
I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your
covenant. So I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall
know that I am the LORD, so that you may remember and be ashamed and
never open your mouth anymore because of your humiliation, when I
have forgiven you for all that you have done, declares the Lord
GOD.
† Even after judgment, God promises a
new covenant, this points directly to Christ (Jeremiah 31:31).
†
This everlasting covenant isn't the Old Covenant restored, it's the
New Covenant fulfilled in Christ (Hebrews 8:6-13).
†
From the fulfilled perspective, this was fully established by the end
of the Old Covenant system in AD 70.
Historical
References
† Josephus records the
corruption and destruction of Jerusalem in detail, confirming the
judgment described here, Wars of the Jews Book 5-6.
†
Eusebius notes that the church understood Jerusalem's fall as divine
judgment for rejecting Christ.
† Irenaeus
wrote that Israel's unfaithfulness led to covenant transition, not
continuation.
How it applies to us today
†
God is the one who gives life, identity, and purpose, we don't create
that ourselves (James 1:17).
† If Israel fell
after receiving everything, it shows that outward religion without
faithfulness means nothing (Matthew 15:8).
†
We don't return to a system that God judged, we live in the
established covenant through Christ (Hebrews 12:28).
†
This chapter warns us not to take what God gives and turn it into
something for ourselves.
