John 14
Paraphrased
By Dan Maines
Introduction
†
Jesus is preparing His disciples for what is about to happen, His
departure, and the transition into the fulfilled covenant reality
†
This chapter is about assurance, access to the Father, and God's
dwelling with His people
† From the fulfilled
perspective, this is about what was completed in their
generation
John 14:1
Don't let your hearts
be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Me
†
Jesus is calling them to trust Him the same way they trust the Father
(John 12:44)
† Their world was about to be
shaken, so He steadies them with truth (Hebrews 12:26-28)
†
Faith in Him was the only anchor in that transition
John
14:2
In My Father's house are many dwelling places, if
it were not so, I would have told you, because I'm going to prepare a
place for you
† The Father's house is God's
covenant dwelling, not a physical location (Ephesians 2:19-22)
†
The many dwelling places speak of positions within the body
†
The preparation is His redemptive work being completed
John
14:3
If I go and prepare a place for you, I'll come
again and receive you to Myself, so that where I am, there you may be
also
† This coming was within their
generation, not thousands of years later (Matthew 16:27-28)
†
It was fulfilled in covenant judgment and transition
†
Being with Him is union, not relocation
John 14:4
And
you know the way where I'm going
† They had
been shown the way already
† The way is not a
place, it's Christ Himself
† Understanding
was still unfolding
John 14:5
Thomas said
to Him, Lord, we don't know where You're going, how do we know the
way
† Thomas is thinking in physical terms
†
This shows their expectation of a literal path
†
The shift to spiritual understanding hadn't clicked yet
John
14:6
Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth,
and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me
†
Christ alone is access to the Father, not temple or law (Hebrews
10:19-20)
† This ends the Old Covenant
system
† Everything points to Him as
fulfillment
John 14:7
If you had known Me,
you would have known My Father also, from now on you know Him and
have seen Him
† Christ is the visible
expression of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15)
†
Knowing Him is knowing the Father
† There is
no separation in revelation
John 14:8
Philip
said to Him, Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us
†
Philip still expects a visible sign
† This
reflects Old Covenant thinking
† He doesn't
yet grasp that Christ is the full revelation
John
14:9
Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long,
and yet you haven't come to know Me, Philip, he who has seen Me has
seen the Father, how can you say, show us the Father
†
Jesus makes it clear He is the revelation of God
†
There is no other manifestation needed
† The
Father is fully seen in Him
John 14:10
Do
you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me, the
words that I say to you I don't speak on My own initiative, but the
Father abiding in Me does His works
† This is
complete unity between Father and Son
† The
works are the Father's works through Him
†
This confirms divine authority
John 14:11
Believe
Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, otherwise believe
because of the works themselves
† His works
proved His identity (John 5:36)
† The
miracles validated His message
† They had
more than enough evidence
John 14:12
Truly,
truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do,
he'll do also, and greater works than these he'll do, because I'm
going to the Father
† Greater works refers to
the spread of the gospel
† The message would
reach beyond Israel
† This is covenant
expansion, not bigger miracles
John 14:13
Whatever
you ask in My name, that I'll do, so that the Father may be glorified
in the Son
† This is authority tied to their
mission
† It is not a limitless promise
outside context
† It was for the establishing
of the New Covenant
John 14:14
If you ask
Me anything in My name, I'll do it
† Again
tied to apostolic work
† It confirmed their
role and message
† It was specific to that
transition period
John 14:15
If you love
Me, you'll keep My commandments
† Love is
demonstrated through obedience
† This defines
true relationship
† It marks covenant
faithfulness
John 14:16
I'll ask the
Father, and He'll give you another Helper, that He may be with you
forever
† This is the Spirit given in that
generation (Acts 2)
† The Spirit remains,
though gifts have ceased
† This was a major
shift in covenant reality
John 14:17
That
is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
doesn't see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with
you and will be in you
† The world here is
unbelieving Israel
† The Spirit would dwell
within believers
† This is New Covenant
indwelling
John 14:18
I won't leave you as
orphans, I'll come to you
† This is covenant
presence
† Fulfilled in His coming in
judgment
† And in the indwelling Spirit
John
14:19
After a little while the world will no longer see
Me, but you will see Me, because I live, you will live also
†
This is about spiritual life
† Not physical
sight
† Life in Him continues through
covenant union
John 14:20
In that day
you'll know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you
†
This is full union realized
† Fulfilled in
the New Covenant
† Complete identification
with Him
John 14:21
He who has My
commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me, and he who loves
Me will be loved by My Father, and I'll love him and will disclose
Myself to him
† Obedience reveals love
†
Love brings revelation
† Christ makes Himself
known to the faithful
John 14:22
Judas,
not Iscariot, said to Him, Lord, what then has happened that You're
going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world
†
Still expecting a visible revealing
† Missing
the spiritual nature of it
† This shows their
confusion
John 14:23
Jesus answered and
said to him, if anyone loves Me, he'll keep My word, and My Father
will love him, and We'll come to him and make Our dwelling with him
†
God dwells with His people
† This is the true
temple reality (Revelation 21:3)
† Fulfilled
in the New Covenant body
John 14:24
He who
doesn't love Me doesn't keep My words, and the word which you hear is
not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me
†
Rejecting Christ is rejecting God
† This is
why judgment came on Israel
† The message is
from the Father
John 14:25
These things I
have spoken to you while abiding with you
†
He prepared them ahead of time
† So they
wouldn't be shaken
† Everything was
foretold
John 14:26
But the Helper, the
Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He'll teach you
all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you
†
This was for the apostles
† It ensured
accurate teaching
† It preserved the
truth
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you,
My peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you,
don't let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful
†
This is covenant peace
† Not dependent on
circumstances
† It anchors the believer
John
14:28
You heard that I said to you, I go away, and I'll
come to you, if you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to
the Father, for the Father is greater than I
†
His going was necessary
† It led to
fulfillment
† The coming again is tied to
that process
John 14:29
Now I've told you
before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe
†
Fulfillment confirms faith
† Prophecy was for
them
† It strengthened their trust
John
14:30
I won't speak much more with you, for the ruler
of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me
†
The ruler is tied to the opposing system
†
Satan working through that structure
† He had
no claim on Christ
John 14:31
But so that
the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father
commanded Me, get up, let's go from here
†
Christ is perfectly obedient
† This leads to
the cross
† Fulfillment is about to
happen
