John 8
Paraphrased
By Dan Maines
Introduction
†
Jesus confronts the leaders of Israel as their system is reaching its
end and exposes their sin and blindness (Matthew 23:36)
†
He reveals Himself as the true light, showing their darkness and
rejection of truth (Isaiah 60:1-2)
† This
chapter builds toward judgment on that generation that refused Him
(Luke 19:41-44)
John 8:1
Jesus went out to
the Mount of Olives
† He separates from the
temple system that was about to be judged (Luke 21:37)
†
The Mount of Olives is tied to judgment over Jerusalem (Zechariah
14:4)
† This shows a shift away from the old
covenant center
John 8:2
At dawn He
returned to the temple, and people gathered around Him, so He sat and
began teaching
† The people were drawn to
truth while leaders resisted it (John 7:46-48)
†
God was still extending mercy before judgment came (2 Peter 3:9)
†
Teaching in the temple shows patience before destruction
John
8:3
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in
adultery and placed her in the middle
† They
used the law as a trap instead of for righteousness (Hosea 6:6)
†
Their actions reveal hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-23)
†
They cared more about accusation than justice
John
8:4
They said to Him, Teacher, this woman was caught in
the act of adultery
† They focused on outward
sin while ignoring their own (Matthew 23:25-28)
†
Their purpose was to accuse, not to restore (Revelation 12:10)
†
This reveals the corrupt use of the law
John 8:5
Moses
commanded us to stone such a woman, so what do You say
†
They tried to trap Him between Roman authority and Mosaic law (John
18:31)
† This shows the weakness of the old
system (Hebrews 7:18-19)
† They were testing
Him, not seeking truth
John 8:6
They said
this to test Him so they could accuse Him, but He bent down and wrote
on the ground
† Their intent was accusation,
not righteousness (Psalm 56:5-6)
† Writing on
the ground reflects divine authority in judgment (Jeremiah 17:13)
†
He remains calm while exposing their motives
John
8:7
When they kept pressing Him, He stood up and said
the one among you without sin should throw the first stone
†
He turns the law back on them (Romans 3:19)
†
The law condemns all, not just the accused (James 2:10)
†
Their guilt is exposed publicly
John 8:8
Then
He bent down again and continued writing on the ground
†
He does not argue, He reveals truth (Isaiah 42:2-3)
†
Judgment is unfolding without force (John 3:19)
†
Their conscience is being stirred
John 8:9
When
they heard this, they left one by one starting with the older ones
until only Jesus and the woman remained
†
Their conscience testified against them (Romans 2:15)
†

†
Truth drives out false judgment
