Matthew
24 Fulfilled – Confirmed by Historical Writers
Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the old
covenant age. The following verses from Matthew 24 were fulfilled in
the first century, and historical records back it up. 1. Matthew 24:4-5 – False
Messiahs
"For many will come in My name, saying,
'I am the Christ,' and they will mislead many."
Josephus,
Wars of the Jews 6.285-287 – False prophets deceived people,
claiming signs from God. Many were misled and died in the siege. 2. Matthew 24:6-7 – Wars,
Famines, Earthquakes
"You will be hearing of wars
and rumors of wars... and there will be famines and
earthquakes..."
Josephus, Wars 5.424-426 –
Famine in Jerusalem was so severe that people resorted to eating
their own children.
Acts 11:28 – Agabus predicted a
great famine.
Tacitus, Histories 5.13 – Reports
earthquakes and disturbances throughout the empire. 3. Matthew 24:15-16 – Flee
to the Mountains
"When you see the abomination of
desolation... those in Judea must flee to the mountains."
Eusebius,
Ecclesiastical History 3.5.3 – Christians fled to Pella after
being warned by divine revelation. They escaped the destruction. 4. Matthew 24:21 – Great
Tribulation
"For then there will be a great
tribulation..."
Josephus, Wars 5.10.5 – The
suffering in Jerusalem was the worst in Jewish history. Over one
million died.
"All who came within the city were
destroyed, and the entire city was leveled." 5. Matthew 24:29-30 –
Heavenly Signs
"The sun will be darkened... and
then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky."
Josephus,
Wars 6.5.3 – Chariots and soldiers were seen in the clouds
during the siege.
Tacitus, Histories 5.13 – Reports
of omens, a flaming sword, and voices declaring that the gods were
departing. These writers were not
Christians – yet they confirmed the fulfillment of Jesus'
words.
The tribulation was real. The judgment came. The kingdom
was established. "Truly I say to you, this
generation will not pass away until all these things take place."
– Matthew 24:34 Jesus kept His word.
