Romans 15 Paraphrased

Introduction
Paul continues addressing unity, showing how the strong were to carry the weak as the old system was passing away.
This was written to real believers living at the end of the age, learning to live together as one body in Christ.
The focus is not on self, but on building others up in the finished work of Christ.

Romans 15:1
We who are strong must carry the weaknesses of those who are not strong, and not live just to please ourselves
Strength here is understanding freedom from the Law (Galatians 5:1)
The strong were to support the weak, not look down on them (Romans 14:1)
This reflects Christ's selfless example (Philippians 2:4)

Romans 15:2
Each of us should seek to please our neighbor for their good, so they are built up
The goal is edification, not self-advancement (1 Corinthians 10:23)
Love focuses on strengthening others (Ephesians 4:29)
This keeps unity in the body (Romans 14:19)

Romans 15:3
For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written, the insults of those who insulted You fell on Me
Christ fulfilled what was written about Him (Psalm 69:9)
He bore reproach for God's purpose (John 6:38)
Believers follow that same pattern (1 Peter 2:21)

Romans 15:4
Whatever was written before was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and encouragement from the Scriptures we might have hope
The Scriptures were still instructing believers (2 Timothy 3:16)
Hope comes from seeing God's faithfulness (Hebrews 6:19)
They needed endurance in that generation (Luke 21:19)

Romans 15:5
Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another according to Christ Jesus
Unity comes from God, not human effort (Philippians 2:2)
Harmony reflects one mind in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10)
This was critical during covenant transition (Ephesians 2:14)

Romans 15:6
So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
Unity results in true worship (John 17:21)
Division weakens the testimony (Acts 4:32)
God is glorified in oneness (Ephesians 4:6)

Romans 15:7
Therefore accept one another, just as Christ also accepted you, to the glory of God
Acceptance is based on Christ's work (Romans 14:3)
This removes division between Jew and Gentile (Colossians 3:11)

Romans 15:8
For I say that Christ became a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God, to confirm the promises given to the fathers

This ties Old and New together (Hebrews 8:6)

Romans 15:9
And for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy, as it is written, I will give praise to You among the Gentiles, and sing to Your name

Romans 15:12

Christ is the promised King (Isaiah 11:10)
Gentiles placed hope in Him (Romans 10:12)
His kingdom is spiritual (John 18:36)

Boldness comes from calling (Ephesians 3:7)

Romans 15:16
To be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit

Gentiles were now acceptable to God (1 Peter 2:5)
The Spirit sanctified them apart from the Law (Galatians 3:2)

Romans 15:17
Therefore in Christ Jesus I have reason to boast in things pertaining to God

Unity in Christ matters more than personal preferences
We live in the finished work, not waiting for fulfillment
